TURP/TURIS

Benign prostate enlargement can cause bothersome urinary symptoms. These may respond to drug treatments but surgical options can give better, long-lasting improvements.

Now there are more treatments available it’s important to find the treatment that suits you. Whether it’s TURP/TURIS or laser or UroLift we have years of experience in treating urinary symptoms due to benign prostate enlargement.

TURIS (Trans-urethral resection in saline)

Using a telescope system, the prostate is cut away from the inside and these chips of prostate tissue are then washed out and sent to be looked at for pathology examination. TURP is considered the gold-standard operation for benign prostate enlargement because it is tried & tested & gives durable long-term results. The TURIS system is a newer modification of the standard TURP operation. TURIS allows more accurate cutting with lower rates of bleeding and no risk of TURP syndrome. TURP/TURIS has excellent long-term results in improving urinary flow rates and bladder emptying. Unfortunately, there are sexual side effects to this type of surgery and most men will get retrograde ejaculation (a dry orgasm). A small number of men also experience erection problems. Incontinence is a recognised but rare complication of this operation.
